Being open-source and freeware, the best way to play C&C 1 on modern systems is the Nyerguds distribution and the best way to play Red Alert 1 is the FunkyFresh distribution, both of which are available via CnCNet for free and include a functional multiplayer client with plenty of options.

Aside from gameplay, it was a pioneer in both CD Audio Music and Full-Motion Video in PC games, and has a story which fits the period of the mid-90s well.

I insist you give the campaign to Red alert a try. it is very challenging and the skirmishes are where the game really shines. getting a few friends together to wage war on each-other can make or break friendships and make enjoyable moments for anyone willing to give it a try. 10/10 recommend.
